LAS VEGAS—The International Market Centers (IMC) announced plans to implement an evolution of the World Market Center here, transforming its Gift + Home Market into a premier destination.

Beginning next year, floors 1-14 in Building C, which comprise 1.7 million square feet, will be repositioned as a gift and home powerhouse. WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.–Renewed buyer optimism and positive economic indicators directly resulted in a double-digit increase in attendance and robust order-writing at the winter 2010 edition of the New York International Gift Fair, according to show organizer GLM.
This surge to some 35,000 buyers from around the world significantly exceeded pre-market attendance projections and led many exhibitors to liken the market—and its business activity—to levels not seen since early 2008, GLM said.

UPPER SADDLE RIVER, N.J.–Hunter Douglas has purchased the assets of Acme Window Coverings, a fabricator and distributor of Hunter Douglas’ custom products located in Willowbrook, Ill.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Acme sales organization will continue to work with its dealer base under the direction of the company’s president, Joe Tantillo. Josh Krengel, who with his family owned Acme, will serve as a consultant for an undetermined period of time to aid in the transition.

NEW YORK -- It was all gifts all the time this week in New York City as gift shows opened over the weekend at the Javits convention center and at showroom buildings around town, including 41 Madison, 7W and 230 Fifth Avenue.
Exhibitors at the New York International Gift Fair at the convention center almost uniformly said traffic was good on the opening days of the event and that order-writing was brisk. They attributed that as much to lean retail inventories as any significant pickup in retail activity. Exhibitors said, either way, they welcomed the business.

LAS VEGAS–The World Market Center said registration for this week’s Las Vegas Market was off 2 percent compared with last year’s event and described it as better than expected.
Robert Maricich, president and chief executive officer of World Market Center, said the traffic at the market was “exceeding expectations,” given the “significant dips” in attendance at other trade shows and markets.
More than 6,500 buyers have visited the market for the first time this week, according to the World Market Center.

STUTTGART, Ark.–Kinder Harris is rebuilding its wall decor factory here and working out of a temporary office after damages sustained during a tornado that ripped through the area on May 10.
The factory’s roof has been replaced and water damage is being cleaned up, while building repairs are completed.
“Our relocated offices are up and running now while building repairs are nearing completion,” said Kris Lindsey, president of Kinder Harris. “We are accepting orders for early August delivery.”

STUTTGART, Ark.–High-end wall decor and accessory manufacturer Kinder Harris Inc. sustained extensive damages to its factory when a tornado hit the town of Stuttgart, Ark., on May 10.
Electricity and phone service are still out in many parts of the town, and may not be restored for another three to five days, company officials said yesterday.

Craftmade Sales Up, Income Down for Q3

COPPELL, Texas–Craftmade International Inc. reported a decrease in net income of 14.7 percent to $639,000 for the third quarter ended March 31.
The company also reported a quarterly sales increase of 144 percent to $54.9 million, reflecting its acquisition of casual furniture maker Woodard LLC.
Craftmade said the Woodard acquisition boosted consolidated net sales, partially offsetting the decrease in ceiling fan, lighting and accessories sales in both operating segments, primarily due to the continued decline in the overall housing market.

Kirkland’s Profit Plummets in Fourth Quarter

JACKSON, Tenn.–Kirkland’s, a major specialty retailer of home decor, reported a plunge in profits of 87 percent for the fourth quarter ended Feb. 2.
In a statement, the retailer said its quarterly earnings fell to $1.49 million, compared with $11.39 million during the same period the year before.
Earnings per diluted share fell to 8 cents, down more than 86 percent from the 58 cents in the year-ago period.

DALLAS–Market Center Management Co. has signed a multiyear agreement to help develop and manage the LatinAmerican Trade Mart, a new wholesale trade center in Bogota, Colombia.
The 2.5 million-square-foot trade complex is scheduled to open in 2011 as the largest wholesale mart in South America. It will be the first wholesale marketplace on the continent to serve both international and domestic markets, according to a release.
MCMC is the management company of wholesale trade centers around the world, including the Dallas Market Center.

Paragon Unveils Enhanced Web Site

ALBERTVILLE, Ala.–Paragon has unveiled its newly enhanced Web site, designed to help streamline the ordering process and provide customers with more product information, the company said.
The new Web site, designed by Wheroware, has increased search features and also includes virtual versions of all of Paragon’s printed wall decor catalogs. A retailer locator is expected to go online in the next 60 days. Other new features include designer biographies, a top seller list and media information, including ads and downloadable vignette photography.

Stylecraft Home Decor To Make Cabana Joe’s Lamps, Accents

HERNANDO, Miss.–Stylecraft Home Decor has signed a deal to produce lamps and decorative accessories under the Cabana Joe’s name and will unveil a full collection at the April High Point Market, officials told HFN.
At the High Point Market in October, Stylecraft unveiled the first Cabana Joe’s wall decor line, which met with a strong response, prompting executives to pursue the other categories when they came available, said Charlie McCaffrey, Stylecraft president. Pacific Coast Lighting most recently had the Cabana Joe’s license for lamps and accessories.

Gone since last market are the New Frontier and, at least technically for the week, the Monte Carlo, which is empty following a fire there last Thursday.

Phoenix Art Names Wertheimer President

HONG KONG–Phoenix Art Co. has appointed Alan Wertheimer to the new title of president.
For the past two and a half years, Wertheimer has served as vice president of international sales for Phoenix Art, a China-based home furnishings manufacturer that sells accessories, furniture and lighting to importers. Wertheimer, who is based in New York, will focus on growing sales through European Union companies. He continues to report to Michael Kraft, chairman and founder.
