PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y.–While solid light colors and patterns and prints remained the strongest colorways for home textiles, white textiles came the closest to returning to their prerecessionary levels last year, according to research in home textiles sales from The NPD Group.
In bath, NPD said, white was the only color that outdid 2007 prerecession dollar sales by increasing seven percent. White bedding products gained eight percent in sales last year, finishing second in total sales to patterns and prints. In total, white textiles generated $3.4 billion in sales in 2010, ranking behind solid light colors and patterns and prints.
“White never really took the same hit that other color and pattern segments in home fashions did over the past few years,” said Kathleen Cella, director of NPD’s housewares and home textiles divisions. “The clean, versatile, spa-like appearance of white appeals to many consumers. As the economy begins to make a turn for the better, and consumers begin to give into the desire for something new, patterns and prints will offer something fresh and different.”
