Celebrating the first anniversary of its new format, NY Now is ready for business this month

One year ago, the New York International Gift Fair officially transformed into NY Now, the Market for Home + Lifestyle. This month’s anniversary show is on track to continue the momentum generated by both the first show, last August, and the second show this past February.
According to Emerald Expositions, owner and manager of the show, this month’s NY Now will host a record 600 new exhibitors, which include both companies totally brand new to the show and exhibitors that are returning after a hiatus. More than 400 exhibitors are coming from around the world, representing 60 countries. On the international side, six pavilions—representing Brazil, France, India, Japan, Malaysia and South Africa—will be there. The show will take place at its usual locations—the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and Passenger Ship Terminal Pier 94 in New York City.
Home Textiles Market Week, which encompasses NY Now and vendors in the 230 Fifth Ave. showroom building in New York City, will offer a total of 275 suppliers of mid- to high-end home textiles. These will include manufacturers of bedding, bath products, table linens, kitchen textiles, decorative accessories, area rugs, window treatments and decorative fabrics. About 70 of these suppliers will be new to the market week, Emerald Expositions said.
Christian Falkenberg, senior vice president and NY Now’s show director, said, “On the exhibitor side, we are way ahead of the last winter market and in line with summer 2013. On the buyer side (as of mid-July), our pre-registration also is significantly ahead of where we were last year.”
Falkenberg added that it is reasonable to expect these numbers to track upward, compared to the winter show. During the February New York Now, snow storms during the week affected attendance. “Many of the buyers who were unable to attend have told us that they are coming this summer, so in terms of actual attendance, we do expect an uptick in numbers,” he said.
The largest concentration of new exhibitors will be in NY Now’s Home collection, in the Home Furnishings + Textiles section. Among the textiles first-timers are American Alpaca Textiles, Eagle Products Textiles, Katherine Rally Textiles and Sivaana Luxe-Table Linen. Returning textiles exhibitors include Abanja, Bella Notte Linens, Dash and Albert Rug Co., Fluf Textile Goods, Hamburg House and Pine Cone Hill.
In addition, six new showrooms will debut at 230 Fifth Ave. for the market week. These include Bellino Fine Linens, Triple Luxe Gallery, JT Rose & Co., Peacock Alley, Sferra and Tessitura Toscana Telerie USA. The building will hold a reception for all of the market-week exhibitors on Aug. 18 from 5:30-8:30 p.m.
As always, NY Now will present a four-day schedule of educational seminars and special events. The more than 20 seminars will offer insights into topics such as color and design trends, importing, digital marketing and social media, visual merchandising marketing and other retailing strategies.
Of particular note among the educational offerings is “Color Forecast: 2014 and Beyond,” which will be hosted by the New York City Chapter of the International Furnishings & Design Association on Aug. 18. This session will present insights into the trending colors from host D. J. Carey, editorial director of Cottages & Gardens; and Renee Hytry Derrington, group vice president of design for Formica Group and creative director of Laminex Group, which offers Formica-branded decorative surfaces.
The Pier 94 offerings will include additional market-related programming in the form of seminars, events and special promotions. These will include a multipart series of online marketing sessions offered in partnership with SnapRetail! and a retail strategies seminar. As usual, Pier 94 will be the site for Emerald Expositions’ trade events which will run concurrently with NY Now: Impulse at NY Now, Artisan Resource and SourceNY.
The August NY Now will also bring the debut of the Maker Project, which will showcase individual makers and their products along with a four-part seminar program focusing on the maker movement. Returning special exhibits include SustainAbility, which focuses on products made with eco-friendly and sustainable materials and practices; and Made in the USA, spotlighting domestically produced merchandise.
According to Falkenberg, exhibitors are giving mixed reviews of their business so far this year, “but with no wild swings either way. Overall, the economy continues to improve and the stock market is hitting new highs, so the general sense is pretty optimistic.”
