COLUMBUS, Ohio–Doug Wurl has been appointed executive vice president of merchandising for Big Lots.
Wurl thus assumes responsibility for the closeout value retailer’s merchandising organization, and oversees the company’s initiatives toward furthering the scope and breadth of its global sourcing efforts. He reports directly to Steve Fishman, chairman, president and CEO. Bob Segal and Steven Smart, both senior vice presidents and general merchandise managers; Norm Rankin, senior vice president of Big Lots Capital and Wholesale; and Charles Ellis, vice president of global sourcing, all report to Wurl.
Wurl succeeds John Martin, who has been named Big Lots’ executive vice president of administration. In his new role, Martin is in charge of the retailer’s store operations and human-resources department, and also reports to Fishman. Reporting to Martin are Chris Chapin, senior vice president of store operations; Jo Roney, vice president of human resources services; and Mike Schlonsky, vice president of associate relations and benefits.
Before joining Big Lots, Wurl was vice president, general merchandise manager and business unit president of the home division at Sears Holding Corp. He also served in executive posts with Shopko, Macy’s and May Co.
