Survey: Consumers Planning More Home Furnishings Purchases

WASHINGTON–More holiday shoppers are planning to buy home furnishings during the upcoming season, according to a poll of consumers conducted by BIGresearch for the National Retail Federation.

According to the results of the annual Holiday Consumer Intentions and Actions survey, 18.3 percent of the participating consumers said they plan to make purchases among home decor items and home furnishings, versus 16.5 percent in the 2010 survey. The percentages of those planning to buy jewelry, sporting goods or leisure items, personal-care or beauty items, and electronics and computer accessories also increased over last year.

Most consumers will buy gift cards this year—57.3 percent, the highest result ever for this category in the survey’s 10-year history.

Pam Goodfellow, BIGresearch consumer insights director, said, “Consumers across the country are already sampling the promotions that retailers are offering, being cautious not to overspend by using what’s in their checking accounts and hoping to avoid a bill come January.”
