WASHINGTON–Nearly seven out of 10 retailers expect their online sales to grow by at least 15 percent during the holiday shopping season, according to Shop.org’s eHoliday survey conducted by BIGresearch.
The result was in line with data from the National Retail Federation, the parent of Shop.org, which found that the average shopper intends to do about 36 percent of his/her shopping on the Web during the holidays, up from 32.7 percent last year.
The Shop.org study also found that retailers are preparing for an onslaught of online shopping. More than nine out of 10 survey participants said they will have free-shipping offers—and about a third said they would start their free-shipping offers early in the season. More than half also plan to start online holiday marketing and promotions by Halloween, up from 40 percent in last year’s survey.
Consumers were also polled in the survey. More than two out of five consumers, when asked why they plan to spend more online in this season, cited 24-hour convenience. More than a third said they are motivated to shop online by the free shipping promotions, and more than a third said they’ll shop online to avoid fighting crowds in the stores. Nearly three out of 10 mentioned the ease of comparing prices online as a reason to increase their Internet shopping.
