RESTON, Va.—Spending on the Internet for holiday gifts has reached $22 billion for the Nov. 1-Dec. 10 period, according to comScore, the digital-business research firm.
That total represents a 12 percent gain in online holiday sales over the same period in 2009. Online spending last week was $5.2 billion, up 11 percent year over year. Gian Fulgoni, comScore’s chairman, said, “Americans continue to demonstrate a significantly greater willingness to spend online this year than in seasons past.”
The company also said today is “Green Monday,” a term coined by eBay three years ago to mark the heaviest, or among the heaviest, online-spending days of the year. Green Monday usually occurs on the Monday of the second week of December and has had very high spending levels since 2005, the first occasion in which spending on this day was measured.
“This coming week, beginning with Green Monday, should see some of the heaviest online shopping activity of the season,” Fulgoni said, “and we expect at least one more day to surpass the billion-dollar spending threshold.”
