New Macy’s Fulfillment Center to Support Online Business

       

       

CINCINNATI–Macy’s, Inc. will build a major fulfillment center near Martinsburg, W.Va., to support the continued growth of its online business, the company announced this morning.

Construction on the 1.3 million-square-foot facility, located about 80 miles northwest of Washington, D.C., is expected to begin in spring 2011; order shipments, primarily to customers in the Northeast and Middle Atlantic states, are expected to begin in summer 2012. Currently, online orders from macys.com are handled primarily by Macy’s fulfillment centers in Portland, Tenn, and Goodyear, Ariz. Bloomingdales.com orders are handled primarily from a fulfillment center in Cheshire, Conn. The 600,000 square-foot Portland facility is currently being expanded. As part of the omni-channel strategy, the company also is investing in website enhancements, systems infrastructure and customer service to improve the shopping experience.

“Our Internet sales continue to grow rapidly as part of the omni-channel strategy at Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s – allowing customers to shop seamlessly in stores, online and via mobile devices in a manner that meets their needs and preferences,” said Terry J. Lundgren, chairman, president and chief executive officer. 

In the first 10 months of fiscal 2010, Macy’s online sales were up by about 29 percent compared with the same period last year, according to Lundgren.
