Big Lots Posts 3.4 Percent Same-Store Sales Increase in Q4

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Same-store sales for Big Lots finished the fiscal fourth quarter up 3.4 percent over the same period of last year, according to a preliminary report from the closeout retailer.

Total sales rose 7.7 percent to $1.6 billion in the quarter, which ended on Jan. 28. Steve Fishman, Big Lots’ chairman, president and CEO, said the company’s decision to be aggressive in certain categories during the holiday season helped the fourth quarter as a whole. Fishman also said seasonal and furniture posted low double-digit gains in same-store sales, while consumables rose in the mid-single digits.

For the fiscal year as a whole, same-store sales edged up 0.1 percent, as total sales rose 3.9 percent to $5.1 billion.

The company will release its full fourth-quarter results on March 1.
