ATLANTA–Fourth-quarter 2009 sales for home-furnishings retailer Havertys totaled $162.4 million, up 0.4 percent from the fourth quarter of 2008.
The increase included a 2 percent uptick in comparable-store sales, according to a Havertys statement. For the full year, Havertys posted sales of $588.3 million, down 14.9 percent from 2008 full-year sales. Same-store sales for all of 2009 fell 14.2 percent.
Clarence H. Smith, Havertys’ president and chief executive officer, said the retailer’s gross profit margins “have held up well even in this promotional environment.” Smith also said the company had a successful New Year’s sale and is looking forward to top-line improvements for 2010 as a whole.
This year will mark Havertys’ 125th anniversary in the retail furniture business, the company said. The company now has 121 showrooms in 17 states throughout the southern and midwestern regions.
