RESTON, Va.–Online spending this holiday season from Nov. 1 to Dec. 14 reached almost $22.7 billion, or 18 percent more than last year, according to comScore, a Web tracking firm. The day with the heaviest spending was Monday, Dec. 10.
But although the amount of spending has increased, the annual rate has declined from 26 percent last year to 18 percent this year, comScore said.
"Consumers in lower-income segments appear to be the most affected" by the subprime housing market crisis, a decline in home values, higher gasoline prices and "an uncertain stock market," said Gian Fulgoni, comScore chairman, in a statement.
