Davis Named Rue La La CEO

BOSTON-Rue La La has added the title of CEO to Steve Davis, who is the online retailer’s president.

Davis succeeds Ben Fischman, who founded Rue La La in 2008 and who is stepping down from this role. Davis has been president since 2010.  Michael Rubin, the company’s chairman, remains in that post.

Gibson, Supply Chain EVP for Family Dollar, Leaves

MATTHEWS, N.C.-Charles Gibson, executive vice president of supply chain for Family Dollar, has left the retailer to pursue other interests, effective today.

A successor has not been announced. According to a Family Dollar spokesman, those executives who had been reporting to Gibson will report to Michael Bloom, president and chief operating officer, until a successor is named.

CIT Appoints Harrington Regional Sales Manager

Evanson Tabbed to Lead HR at J.C. Penney

PLANO, Texas-J.C. Penney has promoted Brynn Evanson to executive vice president of human resources.

Evanson has assumed responsibility over all of the retailer’s human-resource functions across the stores, the supply chain and the home office, including team member relations, recruiting, learning and development, compensation and benefits, and talent operations. She has joined J.C. Penney’s executive board and reports directly to Myron Ullman III, CEO.

Byrne Back as Overstock CEO

SALT LAKE CITY-Patrick Byrne, Overstock.com’s chairman and CEO, has resumed his post after taking a medical leave.

Byrne, also the founder of the retail website, took his leave in February to be treated for cardiac issues thought to be associated with cancer treatments he had received years ago. Jonathan Johnson, former president of Overstock.com, was named acting CEO at that time.

Johnson has been nominated to stand for election to the Overstock board. If elected, Johnson will be appointed executive vice chairman.

Shopko Tabs Cooper as Senior Marketing VP

GREEN BAY, Wis.-Michael Cooper has joined Shopko as senior vice president of marketing.

In his new role, Cooper is responsible for leading the retailer’s branding strategy and marketing initiatives. He reports to Jill Soltau, president and chief merchandising officer, and has succeeded Nancy Altman, who has left the company.

Before taking his new post, Cooper was with Office Depot in a number of executive positions, most recently as vice president of marketing. Prior to joining Office Depot, Cooper was with Accenture as a retail practice consultant.

Martin, former Saks Chairman, to Leave Dillards Board

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.-R. Brad Martin, the former chairman of Saks Inc. who now serves on the board of Dillards, will leave the board next month.

A Dillards statement said Martin informed the board that he will not stand for re-election at the stockholders annual meeting, scheduled for May 18. The statement said Martin, who has served on the board since 2008, has accepted an unspecified leadership position “which will require a significant time commitment.”

Gooch Elected to Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores Board

Schulze Back at Best Buy as Chairman Emeritus

MINNEAPOLIS-Richard Schulze, founder of Best Buy, has returned to the retailer as chairman emeritus.

Schulze’s role is to provide support to the management team, which is still led by Hubert Joly, president and CEO, for its Renew Blue effort to transform Best Buy. Announced last November, Renew Blue is a sweeping effort to reinvigorate Best Buy’s business through enhancing its online and in-store experiences and reducing expenses.

In addition to Joly, Hatim Tyabji, remains chairman of the board.

Walmart’s Mars to Leave as Chief Administrative Officer

BENTONVILLE, Ark.—Tom Mars, executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Walmart, will leave his post on March 13.

A Walmart spokesman declined to comment on the reason for Mars’ departure. He also did not comment on whether a successor has been named or if a search for a successor has begun.

Mars joined Walmart in 2002 as general counsel, responsible for the retailer’s legal department. He was named to his current position in 2009.

Rubin to Become Michaels CEO

IRVING, Texas-Chuck Rubin, president and CEO of personal-care specialty retailer Ulta Beauty, will leave his post on Feb. 21 to become CEO of Michaels Stores.

Rubin will assume his new role “after a brief period of transition,” according to a Michaels statement. When he does, Michaels will discontinue the Office of Chief Executive Officer, which it established last May on an interim basis after its then-CEO, John Menzer, suffered a stroke and went on a medical leave of absence.

Morand Named to Top Merchandising Post at Gordmans

OMAHA, Neb.-Gordmans has appointed Michael Morand executive vice president and chief merchandising officer.

Morand—who has been the retailer’s executive vice president of planning, allocation and analysis—assumed the top merchandising role on an interim basis last month, after the resignation of Johanna Lewis, who had been chief merchandising officer since 2009. Speaking at the ICR XChange Conference, also last month, Jeff Gordman, president and CEO, said Gordmans’ long-term plan was to combine the planning and allocation functions with merchandising.

Lowe’s Picks Prud’homme to Head Canadian Stores

DALLAS-Terry Burman, former CEO of Signet Jewelers, has been appointed as an independent member of the Tuesday Morning board of directors.

A 16-year veteran with Signet, Burman led the company, the parent of retailers Kay Jewelers and Jared the Galleria of Jewelry, until retiring in 2011. During his tenure, Kay Jewelers grew to encompass more than 900 stores with annual sales of $1.5 billion. Jared increased from three stores to more than 175, and annual sales of $750 million.

Peter Sachse, Macy’s chief stores officer, will assume additional responsibility for store planning, design and construction. HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill.-Lou D’Ambrosio, CEO of Sears Holdings, will leave his post on Feb. 2, the end of the company’s fiscal year. Edward Lampert, Sears Holdings’ chairman and chairman and CEO of ESL Investments, Sears Holdings’ largest shareholder, will become CEO at that time.

A Sears Holdings statement said D’Ambrosio had decided to step down due to “family health matters.” He will remain on the Sears board until the next annual stockholders meeting in May, and will be available to assist in the leadership transition.

Jones Moves from Shopko to Become Payless CEO

TOPEKA, Kan.-W. Paul Jones, formerly chairman, president and CEO of Shopko, has been named CEO of Payless Holdings.

Jones will assume his new post on Oct. 22. He had served as Shopko’s CEO since 2009.

Earlier this year, when Shopko merged with Pamida, he was named chairman, president and CEO of the combined company. Along with the merger, Jones is credited with spearheading the creation of the smaller Shopko Hometown format and with the launch of the retailer’s e-commerce platform.

Muehlbauer to Leave as Best Buy CFO

MINNEAPOLIS-Jim Muehlbauer, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Best Buy, will exit his post at the end of the current fiscal year, in February 2013.

Muehlbauer joined Best Buy in 2002. In 2006 he became senior vice president and chief financial officer of Best Buy U.S., and in the following year was promoted to interim enterprise chief financial officer. He was named to his current post in 2008.

Best Buy has begun a search for his successor. Muehlbauer’s future plans were not announced in the statement regarding his departure.

MINNEAPOLIS-The Best Buy board of directors has appointed Hubert Joly president and CEO.

Joly will succeed board member G. Mike Mikan, who became interim CEO in April, in early September. Mikan assumed the interim role after the departure of Brian Dunn, who resigned in the midst of an investigation by the board’s audit committee of Dunn’s relationship with a female employee. In May, a Best Buy statement at that time said the committee’s investigation had found that Dunn’s actions had “negatively impacted the work environment.”

Flynn has become the board’s 17th member, and will also serve as a member of Walmart’s audit committee. His career at KPMG spanned 32 years, and he served as international chairman from 2007 until his retirement in October 2011.

Whalen had been serving as acting chief financial officer since March, when Sharon McCollam, the previous chief financial officer, retired. She has been with Williams-Sonoma since 2001, when she joined as part of the retailer’s financial planning organization.

She was promoted to vice president and corporate controller in 2003, and then to senior vice president in 2006. In 2011, she became the company’s treasurer as well.

SAN FRANCISCO-Williams-Sonoma began its fiscal year with a 2.8 percent decline in net income, which totaled $30.7 million.

Increased expenses were the prime reason for the slip. Gross margin in the quarter, which ended on April 29, fell 60 basis points to 37.8 percent. Selling, general and administrative expenses rose 6.5 percent in dollars and 10 basis points as a percentage of sales, to 31.8 percent.

Flur joined the retailer in 2004 as senior vice president of strategy and business development. In 2008, she was promoted to executive vice president of strategy and marketing, and in 2009 she became executive vice president and chief merchandising officer. She was promoted to her current roles last September.

Dunn Exits Best Buy; Mikan Becomes Interim CEO

MINNEAPOLIS-Brian Dunn has resigned as CEO of Best Buy, and the retailer has named George L. Mikan, one of its directors, as interim CEO.

A Best Buy statement said Dunn’s resignation came from a mutual agreement between him and the board of directors. “There were no disagreements between Mr. Dunn and the company on any matter relating to operations, financial controls, policies and procedures,” the statement said. Best Buy has also begun a search for a permanent CEO, and Dunn also resigned as a member of the board.

Dastugue to Leave J.C. Penney as CFO

PLANO, Texas-Michael Dastugue, J.C. Penney’s executive vice president and chief financial officer, will leave the retailer on April 13.

Michael Kramer, chief operating officer, will assume the chief financial officer duties in an interim capacity. A search has begun for a new chief financial officer.

Dastugue was named chief financial officer last year. He has been with J.C. Penney since 1991, serving as director of property development, treasurer and senior vice president of finance.

Bon-Ton CEO Bergren to Retire

YORK, Pa.–Bud Bergren, president and CEO of Bon-Ton Stores, announced his plans to retire yesterday.

Bergren will remain in his position, which he has held since Aug. 2004, until a successor is named, after which he will join the company’s board of directors as chairman. Once Bergren becomes chairman, Tim Grumbacher will step down as executive chairman and remain a member of the board, the company said.

J.C. Penney Posts $143 Million Net Loss; Names COO

PLANO, Texas–A slew of one-time charges brought a $143 million net loss to J.C. Penney in its fiscal third quarter.

The charges comprised items including the disposition of the retailer’s outlet business, a voluntary early retirement program, process improvements in the company’s supply chain and home office, and costs incurred in the transition of its management. Without these charges, J.C. Penney would have had net income of $24 million for the quarter, which ended on Oct. 29.

Bopp to Become Crate and Barrel CEO; Turf to Retire

Francis had been with Target for more than 25 years. In January, along with his marketing responsibilities, he was named to oversee the company’s brand extension into Canada, after Target had announced it would be purchasing the leaseholds on Zellers locations north of the border, preparing for the opening of its first Canadian stores beginning in 2013.

BENTONVILLE, Ark.—John Fleming, who helped lead Walmart on an unsuccessful trade-up strategy and then refocused the merchandising on value, is leaving the company, effective Aug. 1.

Fleming, who has been chief merchandising officer, will be succeeded on an interim basis by two executives. Jack Sinclair, executive vice president and general manager, grocery, will oversee food and health and wellness merchandise. John Westling, executive vice president, planning, pricing and replenishment, will oversee general merchandise and replenishment.

Alberini reports to Gary Friedman, the retailer’s chairman, who had been the sole CEO and who will now share that role with Alberini. The latter oversees the company’s finance, supply-chain, inventory, information-technology, stores and human-resources functions. Friedman is in charge of the company’s creative, merchandising and marketing operations.

Giordano Named RoomPlace CEO

LOMBARD, Ill.–Midwest furniture retailer The RoomPlace has appointed industry veteran Steve Giordano as its new chief executive officer, effective May 10. 

Giordano will be joining The RoomPlace from The Room Store, where he had been chief operating officer. Giordano is succeeding Dan Powell who was named acting CEO in November. No further information was available.

Giordano has over 20 years of experience in the industry, with employment stints with the Powell Company and Kane Furniture.

Neiman’s Tansky to Retire

DALLAS–Neiman Marcus announced yesterday that Burt Tansky, its chief executive officer, will retire from the position in October.

Karen Katz, head of Neiman Marcus Stores, will succeed Tansky. Katz has been with Neiman Marcus since 1985.

Tansky, who has been the CEO since 2001, will remain non-executive chairman of the board. James Skinner, Neiman Marcus chief financial officer, adds the title of chief operating officer.

Sherman to Retire from Hudson’s Bay

In addition, shareholders voted to set the size of the board at 12 members. Anderson, who has been CEO since 2002, joined the electronics chain in 1973. He will remain on the board as vice chairman until his term expires in 2010.

ATLANTA–The Home Depot named Marvin Ellison executive vice president of U.S. stores, effective immediately.
Ellison will oversee operations of the nearly 2,000 stores the home improvement chain operates. He replaces Paul Raines, who has served as executive vice president of U.S. stores since April 2007. Raines has resigned and moved to another company, according to a statement.
Ellison joined Home Depot in 2002 as vice president, loss prevention, and most recently served as senior vice president of logistics. He previously spent 15 years at Target.

EBay Announces Executive Changes

SAN JOSE, Calif.–Lorrie Norrington, currently president of eBay’s marketplaces operations, was appointed president of eBay Marketplaces.
She succeeds Rajiv Dutta, who is retiring, and will report to John Donahoe, president and chief executive officer. The changes will take effect in October.
Prior to her current position, Norrington was president of eBay International, which generated 52 percent of Marketplaces’ revenues, according to a statement. Before joining eBay in June 2005, she served as chief operating officer of Intuit.
