Blog: HGTV Brings Home Line to Atlanta

The HGTV lifestyle is brought to life in its newest pop-up shop, which HFN visited last week in Phipps Plaza, an upscale mall in Atlanta. There, through June 4, HGTV loyalists can see products from all of its home licenses—including furniture from Bassett, area rugs from Shaw and lighting from ELK, among other categories—set up in trend vignettes as well as highlighted by category. While products aren’t sold at the 3,000 square-foot site, consumers can either go online to purchase items or receive a list of local retailers that sell each product.

Blog: No Plugs Needed for These Portable Lamps

Only the need for light—not an outlet—is required for the new Modern Lantern cordless lamps from husband and wife team Stephen and Carrie Fitzwater. Instead of electricity, these lamps run on a rechargeable 12V Li-Ion battery, which powers an LED bulb that’s equivalent to a 35 watt incandescent bulb. But they have the look of regular lamps, with styles to match.

The lighting category has been influenced by science and space this year with debuts based on starbursts, planets and even aliens and Albert Einstein.

Hubbardton Forge’s Eddy has a spiral design inspired by the Fibonacci sequence where each successive number is equal to the sum of the two preceding numbers. Similar to a seashell’s curved shape, it’s made with forged tapering plates and is offered in two cylindrical glass shade options and a range of finishes.

As anyone in the design field knows, inspiration can come from anywhere, even perfume bottles—as some lighting vendors proved at the recent Dallas International Lighting Market.

From designer Dennis Beard, LBL Lighting’s Lola bath fixture was influenced by mid-century French perfume bottles and was one of the most popular LBL products at the show—so much so that it will be extended to other fixtures. Lola features five clean, opal-glass shapes, each topped with a decorative crystal detail, which rest on a frosted glass shelf.

DALLAS–Early American looks, use of real and faux wood and wavy textured glass and, of course, more LED products are among the introductions at the Dallas International Lighting Market, which opened yesterday.

ELK Lighting debuted the first fixtures for its HGTV line, which previously had only portables. Now the line offers 72 lamps and 80 fixtures, said Brad Smith, CEO. “With HGTV, it’s all about using different materials,” and for these new introductions, they included metal with wood looks, mercury glass and ceramic.

Blog: Lighting Product Not the Only Bright Thing in Dallas

Things felt a whole lot brighter in Dallas – not due to the thousands of lighting product debuting there, though they were indeed illuminating, but to the more positive spirit seen at the Dallas International Lighting Market, which ended yesterday. I’ve been covering the category for four years and I’ve never seen the show have such energy.

Blog: Atlantic Electrical Supply Holds Funeral for Incandescent Bulb

RICHMOND, Va.—With the new light bulb regulations having kicked in Jan. 1, Atlantic Electric Supply Corp. is holding a mock memorial service today for the 100 watt incandescent bulb, complete with open casket. The promotion is both to help consumers in the area learn more about the light bulb changes—the 100 watt incandescent light bulb must now meet certain energy standards, as will the 75-, 60- and 40-watt bulbs in later years—as well as get customers in the door.

It’s shown broken, lit, unlit and flashing. Alone and in groups, depicted on paper, in bronze, as itself and more.

It’s the light bulb, the subject of a current exhibition at The Pace Gallery on 22nd Street in New York. Called “Burning Bright: A Short History of the Light Bulb,” the exhibit documents artists’ fascination with the traditional incandescent light bulb, which has received much attention lately as it is phased out to comply with higher energy-efficient standards.

DALLAS–The Dallas International Lighting Market wrapped up yesterday, and many companies used the opportunity to both bolster their lines and break into new categories. Cancel the Trips To Fantasy Island

By Nancy Meyer
Like many other industries, the lighting industry is going through a downsizing.
Companies have to justify every single expenditure and are finding ways to take costs out of many of their processes, from sourcing and shipping to warehousing and providing customer service. Companies are cutting back on product introductions, advertising and marketing, trade show attendance, sales commissions, and travel and entertainment.

Sales Reps: The Magic Link

In an ideal world, sales representatives serve as the magic link between manufacturer and retailer, true business partners in a venture that benefits all parties.

These days, with improved technologies, consolidation at retail and retailers paring their vendor bases, more sales reps are being cut out of the equation.
