LAS VEGAS—The International Market Centers (IMC) announced plans to implement an evolution of the World Market Center here, transforming its Gift + Home Market into a premier destination.

Beginning next year, floors 1-14 in Building C, which comprise 1.7 million square feet, will be repositioned as a gift and home powerhouse. The plans include the addition of such underrepresented categories as tabletop, home textiles, kitchenware and gourmet, as well as expansion of existing categories and re-merchandised presentations.

NEW YORK–E.J. Victor has signed on as the licensee for Ralph Lauren Home furniture, effective Jan. 1.
The license had previously been held by Henredon, an arrangement that ended earlier this year.
E.J. Victor will produce both case goods and upholstery under the Ralph Lauren Home name. The Lauren brand, which had also been done by Henredon, is not included in this license. Currently, there is no furniture licensee for that brand, which is more moderately priced than Ralph Lauren.

Wickes Holdings LLC sold its furniture inventory, valued at $35 million to $40 million, to a group of bidders led by Hilco Merchant Resources LLC for slightly more than half that, according to the Daily Deal.

Bassett Reports Loss in Fourth Quarter

BASSETT, Va.–Citing conditions that “have been difficult all year and continue to be difficult today,” Bassett Furniture Industries last evening reported a loss of nearly $4 million for the fourth quarter ended November 27, 2007, or a loss of 34 cents a diluted share. The loss compared with a gain during the same period the year before of $359,000 or 3 cents a share.
The quarter’s loss was based on net sales of $76 million, a drop of 0.6 percent on a year-over-year basis.

Furniture Brands Slims Operating Loss in Fourth Quarter

ST. LOUIS–Furniture Brands International reported a fourth-quarter operating loss of $23.4 million, down from the $40 million operating loss it posted in the fourth quarter of 2008.
The company managed this in spite of a 29.2 percent drop in net sales for the quarter, which totaled $285.6 million. Furniture Brands trimmed 29 percent off its selling, general and administrative expenses, and cost of goods sold for the quarter were 28 percent less than in the prior year.

Fourth-Quarter Sales Edge Up for Havertys

ATLANTA–Fourth-quarter 2009 sales for home-furnishings retailer Havertys totaled $162.4 million, up 0.4 percent from the fourth quarter of 2008.
The increase included a 2 percent uptick in comparable-store sales, according to a Havertys statement. For the full year, Havertys posted sales of $588.3 million, down 14.9 percent from 2008 full-year sales. Same-store sales for all of 2009 fell 14.2 percent.

La-Z-Boy Reports Second-Quarter Net Income

MONROE, Mich.-La-Z-Boy reversed a second-quarter loss from last year by posting net income of $5.7 million in this year’s second quarter.
The furniture manufacturer and retailer sliced selling, general and administrative expenses by 16.6 percent and reported a drop of 16.2 percent in total cost of sales. In addition, La-Z-Boy’s interest expense was cut nearly in half. All of this combined to offset a 9.4 percent fall in net sales for the quarter, which totaled $300.7 million.

Ethan Allen Posts Losses for Fourth Quarter, Fiscal Year

DANBURY, Conn.–Ethan Allen reported net losses of $16.9 million for the fourth quarter and $52.7 million for fiscal year 2009 as a whole.
The furniture manufacturer-retailer said the quarterly loss compared with fourth-quarter net income of $11.1 million and full-year net income of $58.1 million last year. Much of the downfall for both periods occurred because of steep sales declines. For the fourth quarter, net sales were $138.7 million, a decline of 41 percent; while for the full year net sales fell 31 percent to $674.3 million.

Stanley Furniture Loss Tops $3 Million in Second Quarter

STANLEYTOWN, Va.–Stanley Furniture posted a net loss of slightly more than $3 million in the second quarter, compared to a net loss of $68,000 in the second quarter of last year.
Net sales for the manufacturer dropped 28.4 percent in the quarter, to $42.3 million. Noting that its losses have been mounting throughout the first half of this year, Stanley Furniture said declining sales, reduced production levels, plant inefficiencies, increased selling discounts and rising factory overhead variances have all had an impact on these results.

Capo, El Dorado Furniture Founder, Dies

MIAMI–Manuel Capo, founder and chief executive officer of El Dorado Furniture, has died. He was 83.
Capo founded the retailer, described in a company statement as the largest Hispanic-owned retail store in the United States, in 1967, one year after he and two of his sons, Luis and Carlos, fled their native Cuba. LAS VEGAS–The recent Las Vegas Market posted an increase of 19 percent in the number of international retail-buyer attendees and 7 percent more buyers from the Northeast, according to figures provided in a statement from World Market Center.
Also, the market welcomed more than 6,500 new buyer attendees, 100 new exhibitors and more than 1,500 manufacturers and product lines. Overall, attendance was off 4 percent from last July’s market, World Market Center said. The market did maintain its historic average of 50,000 registrations.

The license had previously been held by Henredon, an arrangement that ended earlier this year.

Both positions are new.

STANLEYTOWN, Va.–Albert Prillaman, longtime head of Stanley Furniture, has returned to the company as chief executive officer.
Prillaman succeeds Jeffrey R. Scheffer, who has resigned as president, CEO and director to pursue other interests.
In a statement from the company, Prillaman said he would focus on strategic issues targeted toward increasing shareholder value. Stanley Furniture has experienced disappointing financial results for some time, and has been undergoing a restructuring of its manufacturing operations, according to the statement.

ST. LOUIS–Furniture Brands International is consolidating all five of its Broyhill upholstery manufacturing and warehousing sites in North Carolina into a single location in the area of Lenoir, N.C.
The Lenoir site is next to Broyhill’s existing central warehouse. It “will provide immediate efficiencies in logistics and work-flow management, and create additional manufacturing capacity,” according to a statement from Furniture Brands. The facility was a case-goods plant owned by Pacemaker, and has been idle since 2006.

DANBURY, Conn.–Net income and sales both took dives in Ethan Allen’s fiscal year 2008, which ended June 30.
The manufacturer-retailer posted a 16 percent drop in net income, to $58.1 million; and net sales of $980 million, down 2 percent from fiscal 2007. Although the key numbers declined, Farooq Kathwari, the company’s chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement that he was “pleased with the progress we made during the fiscal year.”

Norwalk Furniture Temporarily Suspends Operations During Restructuring

NORWALK, Ohio–Norwalk Furniture said it temporarily suspended operations beginning last Friday until internal issues regarding its current banking partnership can be resolved.
The 106-year-old family-owned manufacturer of custom upholstered furniture said in a statement that it “anticipates that operations will resume soon, and that Norwalk Furniture will fulfill all current and future orders in a timely manner.”
The statement blamed the circumstances on larger credit and banking woes in the country.

Furniture Brands Announces Restructuring Moves

ST. LOUIS–Citing “unusually weak economic conditions,” Furniture Brands International announced this morning that it will expand its manufacturing facilities in Indonesia, exit various local retail locations and consolidate some of its manufacturing still done domestically.
The company, presenting the moves as an acceleration of its strategic plan, said it expects to realize savings of $40 million to $50 million when all the actions are fully implemented. Eventually, Furniture Brands said it foresees savings of $55 million to $70 million annually.

Stanley Reduces Loss in Second Quarter

STANLEYTOWN, Va.–The Stanley Furniture Co., which has been consolidating operations, today announced it has reduced its loss in the second quarter ended June 28.
Net income for the period was down $68,000, a sharp improvement over the loss of $2.37 million during the same time the year before. As a result, the per-share loss reached 1 cent, compared with a 23-cents-per-share loss in the year-ago period.
The results were based on sales of $59.14 million, a decline of 12.7 percent from the $67.7 million taken in last year.

Furniture Retailers Report Sales Decline in May

WASHINGTON–Furniture and home furnishings stores suffered a loss of 5.4 percent in June, when compared with the same month a year ago, even as retail sales overall rose during the same time frame.
The U.S. Commerce Department reported this morning that June retail sales in general, excluding restaurants and bars, reached $345.9 billion during the month, an increase of 3 percent on a year-over-year basis, but virtually flat from May.
The furniture stores, which took in $9.3 billion, were down 1.4 percent from May.

Greg White was appointed senior vice president of sales and merchandising, a new post in which he will oversee all sales and merchandising functions, as well as real estate and customer service. He reports to Kurt L. Darrow, president and chief executive officer of La-Z-Boy.

For 2009, the foundation will present Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., $24,000 to fund eight $3,000 scholarships to participants in a five-year program that combines curriculum from the Department of Technology’s Furniture Industry Studies and the Walker College of Business. The Ameriwood ready-to-assemble furniture division has been the focus of intensive restructuring after it was determined that its factory network exceeded anticipated market needs, the company said. It shut two plants and now has “two efficient plants in North America” instead of four three years ago.

Miller Returns to Run IHFC After Lindh’s Departure

HIGH POINT, N.C.–Tom Lindh has resigned his post as president and chief executive officer of the International Home Furnishings Center, effective immediately, according to a statement. Reasons for his departure were not given.
Bruce Miller, who served as IHFC president and CEO for 20 years until his retirement in 2006, has returned to fill the spot until a successor can be found, officials at the market complex said. Lindh had been with IHFC since 1999.

Craftmade Sales Up, Income Down for Q3

COPPELL, Texas–Craftmade International Inc. reported a decrease in net income of 14.7 percent to $639,000 for the third quarter ended March 31.
The company also reported a quarterly sales increase of 144 percent to $54.9 million, reflecting its acquisition of casual furniture maker Woodard LLC.
Craftmade said the Woodard acquisition boosted consolidated net sales, partially offsetting the decrease in ceiling fan, lighting and accessories sales in both operating segments, primarily due to the continued decline in the overall housing market.

LOS ANGELES–Online shoppers today are notably more likely to purchase big-ticket home items, including furniture and major appliances, directly from a Web site than they were two years ago.
A study by PriceGrabber, a Web-based comparison-shopping service, found that “unease with online merchants’ customer service and the fear of making large online purchases have all decreased” since a similar survey was taken in 2006.

ATLANTA–Haverty’s Furniture Cos. today reported a 24 percent profit increase in the first quarter ended March 31. Earnings for the period were $1.03 million, compared with $831,000 in the same period a year ago.
That translated into earnings per diluted share of 5 cents, up a penny, or 25 percent, from the year-ago period.
The solid earnings growth was based on a decline in sales of slightly more than 3 percent, to $185.2 million. Comparabale-store sales, further, were down 6.3 percent.

Dorel’s Profit Jumps in First Quarter

MONTREAL–Citing the “right combination of products and price points for consumers at the right time,” Dorel Industries this morning reported a 25.8 percent increase in profits for the first quarter ended March 31. In a statement announcing the earnings, Dorel said its net income reached $35.1 million, up from $27.9 million during the same period in 2007.
That translated into a growth in earnings per diluted share to $1.05, up 23.5 percent over the year-ago period.
The strong showing was based on revenues for the period of more than $556 million, up 22 percent.

HIGH POINT, N.C.–High Point Market Authority reported its buyer registration was stable for spring market, despite the tumultuous economy and a wave of recent bankruptcies in the domestic home furnishings retailing and manufacturing sectors.
With a boost from increases in international delegations, interior designers and first-time buyers, the number of buyers registered for the April High Point Market was 47,168, compared with 47,109 buyers registered in spring 2007, according to Brian D. Casey, president and chief executive officer of the HPMA.

LAS VEGAS–World Market Center Las Vegas said it moved the dates for its winter 2009 market from the last week of January to Feb. 9 through Feb. 13, 2009, to better align the market with exhibitor business cycles, relieve industry show conflicts and offer more favorable Las Vegas hotel rates.

Ethan Allen Reports Quarterly Drop in Profits

DANBURY, Conn.–Ethan Allen Interiors today said that its profits for the quarter ended March 31 were down 49 percent, having fallen to $8.84 million from $17.5 million during the same period last year.
For investors, that meant a drop in the value of their diluted shares to 30 cents from 54 cents.
Sales during the period fell 4.3 percent to $$235.9 million from $246.5 million.

AT THE MARKET–High Point Market opened today under gloomy conditions: both the weather and the shape of business.
The furnishings industry has been hit the hardest of any of the home furnishings segments by the slowdown in the housing market, but High Point was expecting the usual number of buyers and sellers this week.

La-Z-Boy to Shift Cut and Sew Operations to Mexico

MONROE, Mich.–In a sharp cost-saving effort, La-Z-Boy will shift all its U.S. cutting and sewing operations to a single plant in Coahuila, Mexico, over the next 18 to 24 months. It will also shut its Tremonton, Utah, plant.
The furniture manufacturer, in a statement this morning, said the shift to Mexico will “impact” 1,050 employees. The Utah facility shutdown, effective this summer, will affect 630 employees. However, because production at the Utah plant will be shifted to five remaining facilities, the company said it expects to hire around 400 workers there.

TENAFLY, N.J.–Funeral services were scheduled to be held today for David Goldstein, president of furniture sales representative agency Metropolitan Furniture Marketing Services, who died this week after complications from back surgery. He was 66.

ATLANTA–Haverty Furniture Company’s profits for the fourth quarter ended December 31 plummeted on declining sales, and investors saw the income of their shares fall by almost half.
Net income for the quarter reached $1.6 million, down 48 percent from the $3.17 million during the same period the year before. Income per diluted share was 7 cents, down 46 percent over the year.

Wright, Cornell to Leave Leggett & Platt Board

CARTHAGE, Mo.–Felix Wright, chairman of the board of Leggett & Platt, and Harry Cornell, chairman emeritus, will not seek re-election to the company’s board.
Cornell, grandson of J.P. Leggett, the company’s co-founder, joined Leggett & Platt in 1950. Wright joined the company in 1959, when he was hired by Cornell. The board’s nominating committee has recommended the election of Richard T. Fisher as the board’s independent chairman. Fisher has served as the board’s president director since 2003.

La-Z-Boy’s Income Up, Sales Down in Q3

MONROE, Mich.–La-Z-Boy this morning reported profits of $9.5 million for the third quarter ended Jan. 26, up from a loss of $7.8 million during the same period last year.
For investors, this meant a net gain of 18 cents per diluted share, compared with a loss of 15 cents in the year-ago period.
These results were based on net sales of $373 million for the quarter, down 7.8 percent over the year.
The per-share profit included income related to “anti-dumping duties received on bedroom furniture imported from China,” the furniture company said in a statement.

LAS VEGAS–A petition is circulating among tenants of the World Market Center here to urge show management to lower rents, common area charges and other fees that tenants pay to maintain their Las Vegas Market showrooms.
The issue emerged early last week after WMC tenant Robert Weiss, principal of Robert M. Weiss Presents, e-mailed about 70 WMC tenants urging them to petition management to lower rents, common area charges, drayage and other fees they pay to maintain their Las Vegas Market showrooms “so we can save the Las Vegas Market.”

DALLAS–Market Center Management Co. has signed a multiyear agreement to help develop and manage the LatinAmerican Trade Mart, a new wholesale trade center in Bogota, Colombia.
The 2.5 million-square-foot trade complex is scheduled to open in 2011 as the largest wholesale mart in South America. It will be the first wholesale marketplace on the continent to serve both international and domestic markets, according to a release.
MCMC is the management company of wholesale trade centers around the world, including the Dallas Market Center.

BoConcept to Open Three New Stores in U.S.

NEW YORK–BoConcept, a furniture manufacturing company retailing its own branded items through franchises, announced openings this morning slated for three cities, bringing its total in the United States to 24.
The three cities are San Francisco, Chicago and Seattle.
In a statement announcing the planned openings, BoConcept said its international goal is 350 stores by 2011.
The 58-year-old family-owned firm attributed part of its success to its franchise philosophy, which enables consumers to buy “from a family business.”

Craftmade Posts Sales, Earnings Decreases; CEO to Retire

COPPELL, Texas–Craftmade International reported a 21.7 percent decrease in quarterly sales to $20.8 million from $26.5 million in the prior-year quarter, primarily due to the decline in the housing market, officials said in its earnings statement and investors conference call this morning.
Net income for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2007, was $482,000, down from $1.5 million for the prior-year quarter. Net income per share was 9 cents, down from 29 cents for last year’s second quarter.

WHITEFIELD, N.H.–Adam and Kyle Tager, owners of Mystic Valley Traders and Belle Maison, have purchased Brown Street Furniture, a high-end case goods manufacturer based here. The Tagers purchased a majority stake from Elwin Wright, one of Brown Street Furniture’s original owners.

Stanley Furniture’s Profit Down for Year, Rises in 4th Quarter

STANLEYTOWN, Va.–The Stanley Furniture Company finished 2007 with a profit decline of nearly 65 percent, but began to make up for it slightly in the fourth quarter, as its net income for the latter period rose 11.5 percent over the same three months in 2006.
In a statement issued this morning, Stanley reported that its profit for the year amounted to $5.9 million, or 64.8 percent lower than in 2006. For investors, that translated into 55 cents per diluted share, down from $1.41.
These results were based on sales of $282.8 million, down 5.4 percent.

Survey: Super Bowl Expected to Boost Furniture Sales

WASHINGTON–Sales of furniture and televisions will increase over last year due to the Feb. 5 Super Bowl, according to the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association’s 2008 Super Bowl Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, the National Retail Federation said.
Viewers plan to purchase 1.8 million pieces of furniture, up from 1.3 million last year, the survey said. Young adults ages 18 to 24 will spend more than other consumers. One in 20 (4.9 percent) of these viewers will buy new furniture, the survey said.

La-Z-Boy Cuts Its Sales Force by 20 Percent

MONROE, Mich.–La-Z-Boy announced today that it will lay off around 30 people, or 20 percent of its sales force, and will consolidate its remaining representatives in 46 territories in the United States and Canada.
In a statement, the iconic furniture company said the remaining salespeople will serve more as “a consultative field organization focused on retail performance.”
The layoffs and repositioning of its staff were made necessary, La-Z-Boy said, because of a “dramatic” change in furniture retailing during the past few years.

Ethan Allen to Close 12 Stores

DANBURY, Conn.–Ethan Allen Interiors Inc. said today it will consolidate about 12 of its retail design centers and two service centers. About half the 175 full- and part-time employees affected by the move are expected to transfer into nearby operations.

ST. LOUIS–Ralph Scozzafava today was appointed chief executive officer of Furniture Brands International, succeeding W.G. “Mickey” Holliman, who will remain as chairman until May 1.
The move follows a plan that Furniture Brands announced when Scozzafava was named vice chairman in June. Scozzafava had been vice chairman of Furniture Brands’ board, and chief executive officer-designate since last June. He had been with the company upon its acquisition of Lane Furniture Industries in 1987. Formerly, he served as a vice president of the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co.
