BELLEVILLE, Ill.–Allan Gramlich, one-time vice president of sales and marketing for Peerless Premier Appliance Co., has died. He was 83.
Gramlich had been with Peerless Premier Appliance since 1955, according to a statement from Alex Volansky, the company’s president, and Marty Friedman, president of Eastern Marketing Corp.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys; a daughter, Sandy Freed; three sons, Dean, Dale and Glen; a son-in-law, Richard Bertrand; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services are scheduled for today.

GE officials said that the strategy was correct, but that it is the wrong time. The company did not predict when it might be the right time.

The “rebound” the research firm uncovered from its monthly survey of manufacturers took the form of a decline in sales in the mid-single digits year over year, an improvement over the industry’s “dismal” October results, the company said in a statement issued this morning. Absent the gains made on Black Friday, November sales would have registered a drop in the high teens.

McGuire will begin his three-year term on the ANSI board on Jan. 1. Whirlpool Reports Gain in Fourth Quarter

BENTON HARBOR, Mich.–Citing cost efficiencies related to its previous year’s acquisition of Maytag, Whirlpool Corp. this morning reported that its fourth-quarter earnings ended Dec. 31 leapt 41 percent to $187 million, up from $133 million during the same quarter the year before. Diluted earnings per share grew to $2.38 from $1.67 in the prior period.

Former Vacu Vin Executives Purchase Typhoon U.S.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.–Seven months after founder Peter Battersby bought housewares company Typhoon back from Mark Holden, Battersby has sold the U.S. division to Simon Kirby and Peter Carter, both formerly of Vacu Vin. The new company, called Typhoon Plus, will remain with its corporate offices here, though its warehouse will move to Haywood, Calif., starting in mid-January. In addition, typhoonus.com will become typhoonplus.com and be an information-only site, which will soon be remodeled.

Circuit City Widens Q3 Loss, Sales Sink

RICHMOND, Va. –Circuit City Stores widened its loss for the third quarter ended Nov. 30, due in part to a sales decline.
The big-box retailer recorded a net loss of $207.3 million, or $1.26 per share, compared with a loss of $20.4 million, or 12 cents per share, for the year-ago period. Net sales fell 3.1 percent to $2.96 billion from $3.06 billion for the same period last year on a 5.6 percent same-store sales decline.
The company in part blamed its transformation project, which is designed to bring it back to profitability on the loss.

Best Buy Sees Double-Digit Q3 Earnings Gain

RICHFIELD, Minn.–Best Buy logged double-digit sales and earnings gains for the third quarter ended Dec. 1, despite a volume decline in major appliances.
The retailer's total revenue for the quarter increased 17 percent to $9.9 billion from the year-ago period on a 6.7 percent same-store sales gain. This helped to drive a 52 percent net income gain to $228 million, or 53 cents per diluted share, from $150 million, or 31 cents per diluted share, for the same period last year.

White Goods a Standout for Home Depot in Third Quarter

ATLANTA–Major appliances were a bright spot for The Home Depot during an otherwise difficult third quarter.
"In a shrinking appliance market, we continue to gain share this quarter building on gains that we've seen for the past few years," said Craig Menear, The Home Depot's executive vice president of merchandising, during the company's third-quarter earnings call. The retailer achieved a 12.4 percent unit market share in the category for the quarter, compared with 10.7 percent in the year-ago period and 11.7 percent in the second quarter of 2007.
