With more than 1,900 exhibitors showing their products at the recent International Home & Housewares Show in Chicago, even the most thorough attendee was hard-pressed to see them all. So HFN has simplified the process by choosing the best of the best.

Air Treatment

Essick Air Products
The idea of an air-treatment product being designed to look like furniture might seem obvious, but such products have not been seen at retail—until now. During the International Home + Housewares Show, Essick introduced the EP9 500 Pedestal humidifier, which is designed to look like a mahogany piece of furniture. On top is a decorative tile inset that resembles a marble tile, which can serve as a surface for a plant, vase or figurine. This tile can be replaced with any standard 12-by-12-inch tile to fit any room’s decor.  The Pedestal is quite a performer, too. It humidifies up to 2,000 square feet and provides 9 gallons of output every day. It also features digital control and a variable speed motor, along with an automatic humidistat and automatic shutoff. The reservoir holds 3.5 gallons and offers a front pour-in opening for easy filling. Also, the Pedestal is made with four caster wheels, which enable it to be moved easily in any room of the home. essickair.com

Made of heavy-gauge forged aluminum, the cookware has four layers of non-stick coating, and there will be 12 SKUs available, including cake and loaf pan inserts. The cookware is also induction friendly. tramontina-usa.com

The model DHB716 comes with a chopper. The model DHB718 has a chopper, beaker and whisk. The model DHB723 has a chopper, beaker, whisk and a Bigfoot pan blender. The unit uses Keurig’s patented K-Cup Portion Packs, of which there are now more than 200 varieties of coffee, tea and cocoa. It’s designed with one-touch technology which includes a rinse-control button to instantly clean the inside of the brew chamber after use—thus ensuring that each cup of coffee is fresh. Cookware: Cast Iron

Lagostina
Influenced by iconic Italian designs and created by Italian architect Marco Ferreri, La Gran Ghisa is the newest cast-iron line from Groupe SEB’s Lagostina brand. Inspired by such shapes as the lamp of a Vespa scooter, the headlights of a Cisitalia car and the handles of a traditional Italian earthenware pot, the new collection includes oval and square cocottes and square and rectangular grills. Handmade of cast iron, it offers an attractive way to serve meals from oven or stove to table. Both grills have pouring edges, and the lids of the cocottes have strategically placed drip points across the interior surface to optimize the steaming process during slow cooking. lagostinausa.com

Cookware: Stainless

Fissler
Solea is the newest line of cookware from German company Fissler. The line brings classic Fissler features—such as the pouring rim and measuring scale and the ability to stack pots of the same size—with new concepts such as its rimless glass lid, made of a single curved piece of impact-resistant glass. A depression in the center of the lid allows for steam to condense and drop back into the pot, and the lid itself can be held upright anywhere along the rim of the pot when both hands are needed for cooking tasks. The line also has a practical pouring function, so the lid can function as a strainer when the chef holds both the top and bottom handles together, making a separate colander unnecessary. Its handles are also ovenproof yet stay cool when used for cooking on the stove. The line uses Fissler’s CookStar all-stove base, made of aluminum encapsulated in stainless steel. fisslerusa.com

Espresso Makers

Saeco USA
Not only does the Xelsis make a variety of espresso beverages, but it’s also engineered to keep all of the milk activity for cappuccinos and lattes outside of the machine. It does so with a large external milk carafe with a built-in cappuccinatore, which hooks directly to the front of the machine and automatically froths milk directly into the coffee cup. Having the milk carafe outside ensures that milk doesn’t get into the Xelsis’ coffeemaking mechanism, and makes cleaning the milk carafe fast and immediate. The new unit is also designed to be attractive, featuring stainless steel and chrome, which provide an elegant touch that fits into any kitchen decor. It’s also versatile, able to make multiple types of beverages, all of which can be personalized. The Xelsis can brew espresso, American-style coffee, cappuccinos, lattes and even just hot water for tea. The technology also includes the ability to create up to six user profiles, which are customizable to fit the preferences of any family member. These profiles can include each person’s taste in aroma, pre-infusion, temperature, length and pressure of the coffee, along with the quality and density of the frothed milk. saeco-usa.com

Espresso Makers: Single-Serve

Gaggia
Two major names in espresso makers have joined forces on a single-serve espresso machine that is compact but “still packs a punch,” according to a statement from Importika, parent of the Gaggia brand. Gaggia for Illy Capsule Espresso Machine uses Illy’s iperEspresso capsules, which are sold at a variety of retailers. Included in the design are push-button controls that enable the user to adjust the amount of espresso he or she wants to brew. One of its unique characteristics is steaming and frothing capabilities, which allow for the brewing of cappuccinos, lattes and even tea. The machine also comes in an attractive design, featuring a glossy exterior made of ABS plastic and engraved with an Illy flower. The front panel has a cup holder and a drip tray that can be lowered to fit tall glasses or raised to fit smaller cups. importika.com

Food Preparation

Lifetime Brands
Lifetime introduced many new peelers and graters at the Housewares Show, and the Pedrini Dual Blade Peeler offers both design and function. It gives the home chef two options for peeling—the traditional straight-edge blade for hard-skinned fruits and vegetables as well as a serrated blade for softer foods. While one is used the other is safely stored away.  “The Pedrini Dual Blade Peeler is unique. The handle slides to either side of the body, revealing the blade to be used while safely covering the blade that is not in use,” said Bill Lazaroff, senior vice president, product development. “Consumers will not only appreciate the clever design and utility, but will immediately recognize both the cost and space savings associated with the Dual Peeler.” lifetimebrands.com

Hair Curlers/Straighteners

Helen of Troy
Helen of Troy debuted the Revlon Titanium, a curler and straightener with titanium plates for even heat distribution and a smooth glide. As the company explained during the show, the plates are pure titanium as opposed to other models that are blends of titanium and ceramic—which have “hot spots” that can cause damage to hair. Because of the pure titanium design, the Revlon Titanium needs just one pass to straighten or curl hair, and leaves hair healthier and shinier because it also emits negative ions. It also meets the needs of women who want to have different looks on different days—straight hair one day, curls and waves the next.  Pure titanium has been used on curlers and straighteners in use by hair-salon professionals. Helen of Troy believes that it is the first manufacturer to bring a pure titanium product to retail. hotus.com

Hair Dryers

Conair
The company has answered the demands of consumers who want their hair-care products to perform like those in a salon with the Infiniti Pro, an 1,875-watt styling tool with an AC motor. The AC motor ensures fast drying time, which means less heat exposure for hair and healthier hair as a result. It is ergonomically designed for the maximum comfort during use, and at 1.5 pounds is considerably lighter than most hair dryers. It combines both ionic and ceramic technology, and comes with switches that provide three heat settings and two speed settings. Among its other features is a concentrator nozzle for pinpoint styling, and a true cold-shot button that sets hair in place for a longer-lasting style. Its bright color makes it stand out on a retail shelf. conair.com

Kitchen Tools & Gadgets

Copco
Copco’s Silicone Scraping Whisk combines both a flat whisk and a spatula, so the cook can perform such tasks as blending, mixing, scraping and whisking with one item. It was one of 21 cleverly designed kitchen gadgets in Copco’s new Smart Gadgets line, which makes food prep easier for the chef. Made of durable, easy-to-clean materials, the line also includes a universal can drainer, a jar opener, an herb mincer, a jar scoop and a collapsible colander. wilton.com

Kitchenware

ärta by Chef’n
Tea products were one of the focuses at the Housewares Show from ärta, Chef’n’s sophisticated serveware and barware brand. The Tea Leaf Infuser was inspired by flower pots and allows the tea drinker to use loose leaf tea in the micro-perforated stainless steel basket. Once filled and the stemmed lid is secured in place, the infuser goes right into a cup or pot of hot water to seep. Slots in the infuser’s lid prevent pooling by refiltering the water through the basket. When the tea is ready, the infuser is easily removed by taking it out by its stem. artahome.com

The toaster portion is designed with variable browning control, a defrost function, a reheat function and a high-rise function when the toast is completed. Total Tabletop/Housewares Collection

TTU
The new Stax Living collection from TTU is “based on space efficiency,” said Rami Izadyar, brand manager, and includes the five categories of prep, cook, serve, store and organize and around. The company showed Stax dinnerware a year ago, and due to its success expanded the line’s categories. “It’s timely, with people living in small spaces. Everything in the line is multi-functional and space efficient.” The shelving system, for example, stands 18 inches tall so it fits below cabinets, and storage items nest within each other. In the cookware category, a four-in-one set compactly fits inside one another for easy storage when not in use. Many items can perform several functions, such as a lid in a cast-iron set that can also be used as a pie pan. The dinnerware category includes melamine, stoneware and acrylic groups. Almost 80 items are in the line. ttucorp.com
