HIGH POINT, N.C.–Groovystuff has partnered with Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., to create a design competition that will give students real-world experience, a chance to earn royalties on successful design, and a reason to choose the home furnishings industry after graduation.
Twenty-three students in ASU’s Industrial Design and Furniture Design program will participate by designing a piece of modern rustic furniture for Groovystuff’s new licensed Dick Idol Legends collection. They must use reclaimed teak and other components that are typical of the Groovystuff line, and they must design an environmentally friendly product that reflects the Dick Idol brand and can be produced using sustainable manufacturing processes.
The students will present their inspirations, drawings, and renderings to Groovystuff and a panel of judges on Oct. 8. The students’ work will be on display in the Groovystuff showroom at the Suites at Market Square throughout the High Point Market, allowing retail buyers to vote on their favorite.
The judging panel will consider the votes and comments from marketgoers and will select the top five designs to be presented to the Dick Idol brand partners at the end of the market. Finalists will have their products produced by Groovystuff for exhibition during the April 2011 High Point Market, which also marks the 10th anniversary of the Dick Idol brand.
The designs will be sold during that market, and the final winning design will be the one with the most sales. The winning student designer will be awarded $1,000 and a permanent 1 percent royalty on all future sales of the product.
