AMHERST, Mass.–As of July 1, Taylor van der Mandele will be the new owner and president of AMS Imports, a transition that has been underway for a year. After 34 years at AMS Imports, founder Anne Schewe is retiring and will remain as a consultant to AMS.
Van der Mandele joined the company last year as executive director. She has a background in marketing and sales and recently completed her MBA. And while she was not previously involved with the rug business, she did grow up with “a super rug junkie”—her father, who collected rugs as a hobby on overseas work trips, she said.
AMS offers rugs from around the world and works closely with Aid to Artisans, an organization that connects handicraft people in developing countries with importers such as AMS. AMS is working currently in Jordan, Peru and Egypt with the Aid to Artisans connection and additionally imports from Scotland, Afghanistan, Morocco, India, Colombia, Nepal, Turkey and Uzbekistan. AMS’ Rug Search Group, a program that sources rugs for designers that are working on projects in need of area rugs, has been successful, the company said.
AMS has a showroom at High Point Market and partners with a showroom in New York.
